Overview

One person lost their life on Irish roads during the period covering 4–7 November 2026, with a further person hospitalised following the same collision in Co Offaly. Behind this single statistic is a family and a community left to grieve, a reminder that every road death represents an irreplaceable loss.

Incident Summary

Friday, 6 November – N52, Cappancur, Tullamore, Co Offaly

A two-vehicle collision on the Tullamore to Ballinagar Road at Cappancur claimed one life and left a second person requiring hospital treatment. The crash occurred at around midday, on a stretch of the N52 that serves as a key route through the midlands. Gardaí attended the scene and investigations are ongoing.

Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the person who died, and we wish a full recovery to those who were injured.

Year-to-Date Context

As of this period, our tally — compiled from published news reports — stands at 148 road deaths in 2026. At the same point in 2025, the Road Safety Authority recorded 159 fatalities, suggesting a reduction of approximately 7% year-on-year.

It is worth noting that our running count typically runs slightly above the final official RSA figure, so direct comparisons should be treated with some caution. That said, the direction of travel is cautiously encouraging. While any reduction in deaths is meaningful, it offers no comfort to those who have lost someone this year, and it is not a signal to become complacent. Over 140 families across Ireland have already faced this year what no family should ever have to face.

Safety Advice

The N52 corridor and similar regional routes carry significant volumes of both local and through traffic, often at speeds that leave little margin for error. The midday timing of this collision is a reminder that fatal crashes do not happen only in darkness or poor weather — vigilance is required at all times and in all conditions.

The Road Safety Authority continues to emphasise several core behaviours that save lives:

  • Slow down – speed remains a factor in a disproportionate number of fatal collisions
  • Allow extra space – maintain a safe following distance, particularly on regional roads with limited overtaking visibility
  • Never drive impaired – fatigue, alcohol, and distraction each dramatically increase risk
  • Wear your seatbelt – every journey, every time, every passenger

If you are travelling on unfamiliar rural or regional routes, take additional care at junctions, bends, and stretches where road conditions may change quickly.

Looking Ahead

As November deepens, driving conditions across Ireland will increasingly test road users — shorter days, low winter sun, wet leaves, and early frosts all demand extra care and earlier preparation. We encourage every driver, motorcyclist, cyclist, and pedestrian to treat each journey with the attention it deserves.

Road deaths are not inevitable. The gradual, modest improvement seen in this year’s figures reflects what is possible when awareness, enforcement, and individual responsibility work together. Let us ensure that every person who set out on Irish roads this week makes it home safely.

If you have information relating to any road collision, contact your local Garda station.
